So I went to look at and drive this Mazda. I looked under the front and it looked rust free. I believe it achieved this by coating itself in oil. The front subframe was coated in something. I looked at the rear suspension and I think I got tetanus. I’m pretty sure any work done to the back would require cutting. The exterior has some bumps and bruises, but no big deal.
I was willing to over look all these because it was such a beautiful car and the interior was so clean. There was even sub in the spare tire!
I took it for a drive. It felt solid and smooth. The steering was heavier than I expected. At some point the CEL came on. When I returned to the dealership i was talking to the guy telling him the CEL came on. He said that it could be something as simple as the gas cap not being tight and he’d pull the codes. Then I look back at the car and see smoke coming out of the passenger side of the engine compartment. I turn to the guy and say, “Well ... that’s not confidence inspiring.” and hand him back the keys.

I think that’s a sound decision. At least it warned you before you bought it!

I don’t know Mazda that well, but there’s a red Mazda 3-looking car for sale near me. It has a big sign in the window that says *TURBO* if that helps. I can get you their contact info if you’d like. It’s near Portland.

No amount of Armor-All wipes in the engine bay will hide a massive oil leak. Gee, I wonder why this person traded it in instead of selling it privately?

Thanks but I’m looking to avoid turbos. Any turbos within my price range are probably a bad idea. My budget is < 5K.

The guy assured me that it was probably just they guys that did the oil change dumped oil everywhere. The engine bay had certainly seen a lot of armourall.

I understand. To paraphrase Clarkson, advertising in such a way is not a sign that the car was carefully maintained and driven gently.

That’s why I sold mine this year. It looked nice from the interior and exterior, but the underside and engine bay were entirely coated in rust. The engine was still running strong at 190k miles though.

Nah... Seats more, RWD, can tow serious weight, SBC so can be fixed with a hammer and parts found on the side of the road, etc... It’s the last great American wagon.

Oddly enough, that motor seems to have less problems in Fusions than it does in 6s. There are a lot of 6s on the forums with Fusion engines now because their original engines bit the dust.

Over my 60 mile round trip commute I’ll easily spend enough $ on gas that I could purchase that Mazda6 and fix it.

Bizarre. Must be more conservatively tuned in the Fusion. Oddly enough I drove a Taurus wagon with the same engine and it was also a total crap can.

Forget the wagon, get a Mazdaspeed 6 and live like a king.

Every car I have owned has been American and that Mazda is essentially a Fusion wagon.

Any Mazdaspeed in my price range should probably be avoided.

Yeah, oh and that milk in the oil? Guys doing the oil change just came back from McDonald’s and accidentally spilled some vanilla milkshake in the oil fill. Oh and that ticking sound? Guys doing the oil change dropped their alarm clock in there. Belt squealing noise? No, that’s the guys doing the oil change again, their pet hamster is stuck in the air intake. We’ll take care of all that, no problem.

That’s not rust on the rear suspension it’s just caked on mud. It’ll wash right off.

If I don’t have an auto my wife cannot and will not drive my car. This means I will not be able to swap cars with her to take the Soul to the mechanic.
